Personalized Experience

Fort Chadbourne is a frontier military fort established in 1852. It was officially abandoned in 1867 when they ran out of water and supplies. Samuel and Mary Maverick owned the fort site and leased it to the military. Garland Richard's family purchased the fort site from the Mavericks in 1877 and they have been here for 8 generations. A nonprofit organization was formed to protect, preserve and present the historic site of Fort Chadbourne to the public. When you visit Fort Chadbourne you will walk thru a 12,500 sq ft visitor center/museum. We then take you to see the actual Fort buildings. All the buildings have been stabilized and a few buildings have been restored. We love showing Fort Chadbourne so gather up and friends and family to visit.

    Personalized Experience
We met the owners of Fort Chabourne at a Texas History celebration a few years ago where they spoke about the restoration efforts they have undertaken at this site. After listening we had to stop by for ourselves. It is out of the way - but its remoteness preserves the beauty of the area and you an almost imagine coming across the land in a wagon. The museum is their personal collection of Overland Trail memorabilia and firearms. It also explains the overview of the site. We were the only ones there and they gave us a walkthrough. To see the site they provided a tour in a covered ATV - this was nice as we had small children, it was hot, and the site is pretty large. They took us in the individual fort buildings and explained their significance. They also have several antique wagons that they are restoring. I suggest a visit for a more personal experience to Texas history.

    You have to come
I visit every fort I can. I've visited upwards of 20, some multiple times. Each one has something different to offer, some new lesson to teach and Ft. Chadbourne was no exception. I was so taken by it that having arrived late in the afternoon, I vowed to return the next day which I did. I took my time walking all around it, reveling in the beautiful flowers and the quiet and trying to imagine what it must have been like when it was active. The staff is amazing. Very eager to answer questions and point out things. The gun collection alone is worth the $8 donation they ask.
