Informative Return Visit

Earlier this month I received an email from the Texas Historical Commission which contained a list of events in Texas. One of the events listed was a presentation at the Fanthorp Inn in Anderson, Texas, on James Green McDonald, Jr. (1858–1938), who was an influential figure in Grimes County History. Chandler Wahrmund, an educator/interpreter for the Texas Historical Commission, did a great job of telling us about this conflicted individual. He had a number of exhibits that enhanced his presentation. I always enjoy visiting this historic site. There is no admission fee, but donations are welcomed.

Early Texas History Brought to Life
While off the beaten path, the Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site in Anderson, Grimes County, Texas, is a place well worth visiting for people who are interested in Texas history. The Fanthorp Inn, owned by Henry and Rachel Fanthorp, served as a stagecoach stop, inn, and post office between 1834 and 1868. When my friend and I arrived, we were the only visitors to this historic site, and Chandler Wahrmund, a Texas history educator and interpreter, gave us a private tour of the inn and surrounding area. He possessed a wealth of knowledge and did an exceptional job of bringing the Fanthorp Inn to life. Also present at this historic site is a replica stagecoach which is used frequently to give visitors rides and the cemetery.

    Life during 1830's travel
We were the only two people visiting this site on a recent Sunday during Covid so we scored a personal tour by Adam. Another reviewer (Joan W) gave a great recap of the Inn so read that for great details. We learned so much about 1830's travel and customs. We especially enjoyed the dining room setup with the "shoo fly". The stagecoach replica in the old barn was interesting since that one held 12 riders inside such a tiny space. During the current pandemic there are no rides being offered. We were told that during wildflower season that the crowds are large there for one thing because of all of the flowers. We really enjoyed the history of the place and you will too!
