a sad and brutal story

here is a large memorial to Jim Fannin and his men. Fannin and his men had captured the Presidio at Goliad very early during the Texas Revolution and renamed it Fort Defiance. Riders from the Alamo came to get help but Fannin for various reasons could never get there so retreated back to the Presidio. Finally on orders from Sam Houston to abandon Goliad Fannin waited to long and was caught on the road at Coleto Creek where a battle ensued with troops under Gen Urrea.. The Mexicans captured about 400 Texians and marched them back to Goliad where Urrea was ordered by Santa Ana to show no quarter to the Texians although Gen Urrea pleaded for their mercy. The captured Texians were marched outside of town and lined up and shot. Their bodies were then piled and set afire by burned little. The people of Goliad retrieved the bodies and placed them in this mass grave atop which now sits the Fannin Memorial.

Experience the natural beauty of this amazingly beautiful park as you reflect the high cost of Independence.
A beautiful park that allows you to reflect the terrible cost of Independence. It offers a serene, colorful and peaceful place to enjoy a family picnic, hike or take long morning or evening walks. The park betrays the site where Col Fannin, enroute to the Alamo, was captured after a defensive fight against Santa Anna's cavalry, and led back to Goliad where all 400 Texian troops were executed. This, along with the Presidio Bahia is a must see experience to learn more about the beginnings of the Texas Independence.

    Amazing History
We specifically went to Goliad to experience Texas history. The monument was great, and we were very impressed with the number of volunteers who were working to make it the best it could be for visitors. One man comes from San Antonio each year to power wash the entire monument. Hats off to him and the heritage he works to preserve.
