Best in Texas

An alert TA member pointed out an error in my post on this incredible structure. It is a great example of the H H Richardson Romanesque architecture that was NOT done by the master, for whom the the style is named--a very rare event. I said the he was the architect, but the fact is that J Gordon Riley actually designed it in the late 1890's. He was a real disciple of Richardson and is credited in building numerous wonderful buildings. There are a number of courthouses in Texas that are examples of his creativity. For those interested in his works, you can Google him and work out a plan to visit/view them. It is wise to call in advance to secure the hours the buildings will be open. It is a shame to come this far and to only see the outside of these structures. The jury rooms, woodwork, floors, and other interior details are works of art in their own right.

Of all the beautiful Texas Courthouses, this is THE ONE!
Given that Texas has 254 Counties, it is almost impossible to see all of the County Courthouses. Frankly, some of them you do not want to see! However, if you are in the DFW area, take the time to drive to Waxahachie (yes, that is the name of the city) to see both the inside and outside of this beautifully restored Richardson Romenasque structure. It is one of his best architectural works. Numerous cities have good examples, but this one is really special.
