    A courthouse square with potential
My 52nd Texas County Courthouse. Old Rip makes for an interesting story. The Courthouse is near some interesting attractions, all of which were closed midday on a Saturday. The museum across the street was closed due to lack of volunteers but seems like a nice compliment to the courthouse. This square has lots of potential. Well, it was a quick visit and onto Callahan County.

Final resting place of Old Rip, legendary Texas Horned Toad
The 1928 Art Deco-style courthouse displays the glass-coffined remains of Old Rip, the legendary Texas horned toad, who. according to witnesses at the time, was originally "buried" in the cornerstone of the 1897 courthouse and emerged alive 31 years later when the corner-stone was opened in 1928. Old Rip was taken on a nationwide tour but died soon after and was enshrined in the small glass-top casket on view at the courthouse. A unique Texas legend to visit as you travel west on I-20.
