Devil's Backbone Tavern, Texas, United States

4.5 (10 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #1 in Fischer Country & Western Bars

Friendliest bar in Tx

Worth the stop! Visited with the locals, only stopped to have a quick brew, left a few hours later. It’s a treat to enter a bar and be greeted by the staff and patrons. They even handed us some coins to play the juke box, and someone bought us a round for the table. Here’s to the staff and especially to the patrons. Loved the atmosphere and the High Dollar Ceiling. Check them out! Treated to a few ghost stories to boot.

STEP BACK FIFTY YEARS TO OLD-TIME HONKEY-TONK TEXAS!
During the early 1950s, my family lived in a small town on the edge of the Texas Hill Country. One of my childhood memories is of going to the Devil's Backbone Tavern with my parents on Saturday nights and playing on the shuffleboard table while Mom and Dad tossed back a few "cold ones" and boot-scooted around the small dance floor to the music of a live band (yes, times have changed). Fast forward 60 years: While showing friends around the Hill Country on a rainy afternoon, we stopped by the Devils Backbone Tavern. We walked in to friendly greetings and the smell of cigarette smoke, and drank a long neck while listening to a live band. According to my memory, nothing had changed since 1954! This is a fun experience that gives some of the flavor of old-time Texas!

    Life's too long to wait!
It is a "shack out in the hills" about an hour from Austin. The beers are cold and the people are friendly as Todd Snider promised. Virgie is long retired, but service was great. Outdoor seating is available.
