Reached full capacity by 10am today august 29th
I picked average rating because I can't even rate it because we weren't able to get it. I did my research beforehand and found this family friendly beach park at Canyon lake. It opens at 8. I read on TA to go early because according to reviews it fills up by noon and once they reach capacity that's it. We got there at 10am where it says park entrance. There was a line to get in. Once we got to the entrance sign there was a barricade up. They stopped letting cars in about 20 cars before us which makes sense because we saw people turning out of the line but we weren't exactly sure so we waited in the line anyway about 10 minutes. I was very disappointed to not be able to get in. Because I'm not familiar with that area I also wasn't sure where to go after that and was kind of afraid that I wouldn't get into other places either. Tried calling numbers for a couple of the other parks but I guess because it's the weekend nobody answered. The park does look nice from videos and pictures so hopefully I can try again in the future if I can get over being so disappointed today. My advice If you plan on going here in the next few weeks I would definitely get there before 8:00 a.m. when it opens.

Not a bad deal for four bucks.
With two double boat ramps and a protected cove Comal Park makes a great place for me to putter around in my sailboat. There are free public ramps on the lake but I feel safer leaving my car in the restricted access park - $4 keeps the riff-raff out. There is a swim beach but currently the entire roped off swim area is above the waterline due to the drought. You can still swim but keep an eye out for boaters and drop-offs. The north facing shore has quite a steep drop - they called it Canyon Lake for a reason. Some observations... 1. Bring your own shade. There is no guarantee of shade (or a table either for that matter) on peak weekends. Closer to the water = fewer trees. 2. Bathroom condition varies. Keep that in mind and plan accordingly. 3. Park closes before sunset. 8pm at my last visit. Be ready to pack it up promptly. 4. Park is only open April through Sept. 5. In drought conditions boat ramps are closed as lake levels dictate. Check online if you aren't sure if Comal Park ramps are open. [--]
