Canyonlands and Mt Lakeway, Texas, United States

4.5 (3 reviews) Spent 2-3 hours Ranking #9 in Lakeway Biking Trails • Hiking Trails

What a find - Nice trails

Trails are rugged and rocky, not what I expected only minutes from the posh homes of Lakeway. It was nice to get our hiking boots on and hit the trails. It's about 5 or 6 miles round trip from Canyonlands trailhead to the top of Mt. Lakeway, perfect on a 65 degree day but I cannot imagine doing it during the heat of the summer. However, it is nicely shaded through most of the switchbacks. It is also a mountain bike trail and the paths are not very wide, so keep an eye out for bikes. The paths are not very well marked once you get outside of the immediate Canyonlands, so if you are looking to trek to the top of Mt. Lakeway, just follow the power lines (the switchbacks give you an easier trail option with more shade, but of course they are much longer than just following the power lines.)

    unknown gem....
This was a surprise. Found this place while perusing the hikingproject.com website. So with chores to do around the house bah! Quinn and I set out to find this jewel. And a jewel it was. Everything you want here in little Lakeway. Canyons, mountains, waterfalls, views. Quinn and I turned in about 5.8 miles which is what the average hiker to the area seems to get. We did half the canyon trail and turned up the Mt Lakeway trail. 2 miles later after coaxing Quinn kicking and screaming to the top, (you know dogs and children are very similar sometimes), we enjoyed the wonderful views of Lakeway and Lake Travis. On the way down we enjoyed the better half of the canyon which contained a small creek with several cascades. Now the particulars about this trail. Wear good shoes it is rocky. You will step up and over hundreds of small rock ledges. The way up is made a bit easier by multiple switch backs. Take water there is a restroom and drinking fountain about 1000 yards in after that no water. You will follow power lines a lot which is the only reason I gave this a 4 instead of a 5 star rating. You have to work at it to get a good picture without the powerlines UGH! Otherwise a beautiful area and a challenging trail system.

    Better for biking than hiking!
Better for biking than hiking. Nice mountain biking trails! Will return whenever I have my bike. Lots of hills. Definitely close to civilization though.
