Wonderful get-away

Uniquely nestled in the Upper Highland lakes region of the Texas Hill Country, Canyon of the Eagles takes its name from the American Bald Eagles that winter in the area. The park showcases the flora and fauna of Lake Buchanan and provides a refuge for the endangered Black-Capped Vireo, Golden-Cheeked Warbler, and American Bald Eagle. Common wildlife sightings include rabbit, deer, roadrunner, snake, bobcat, feral pig, and armadillo. Throughout the spring and early summer, wildflowers bloom in abundance! Canyon of the Eagles is in Central Texas Hill Country on Lake Buchanan, the largest body of water (over 30 miles in length and 5 miles wide) in the Highland Lakes’ region. The property is located 25 minutes from Burnet, 50 minutes from Llano, 90 minutes northwest of Austin, 2 hours north of San Antonio, 4 hours southwest of Dallas and 4 hours west of Houston. Ranch Road 2341, one of the most scenic roads in Texas, ends at its entrance.

    Well-maintained trails
A day pass for seniors is $3. Get a map at the entrance or resort gift shop - trails are clearly marked. We had a beautiful sunny afternoon to walk several of the trails. We didn't see any eagles, but saw other birds at the lake and had 4 armadillo encounters. When they finally noticed us, they scurried into the underbrush. Restrooms at the amphitheater parking area were clean.

Great place but very important to understand what you are getting
We spent Valentine's Day Weekend at Canyon of the Eagles. We absolutely loved it and will definitely be back. However, it is important to understand what you are getting or you could be disappointed. This is a place to go and relax....to enjoy the beautiful nature, take a hike, some photos, eat a good meal, go on the Vanishing Texas River Cruise, star gaze, hear a little music, have a picnic. It is not a resort that offers high end dining, an amazing bar scene or lots of night life. If that is what you want, go somewhere else because you will be highly disappointed. What you do get is this. A very friendly staff. A basic room with a decent bed (or beds), stained cement floor (great since they are pet friendly so no nasty carpet), a basic, clean bathroom with a good shower. There is a not a TV in the room so don't let that be a surprise. Not sure if they have internet or not. We went to relax, not work or be on the computer. There is decent cell coverage and I am sure you could use your cell as a hot spot if you needed to. We stayed in a room in cabin K. There are 4 rooms to a building. K is great because it is very well located to the bar and restaurant and parking lot. Also, it is one of the best for sunset viewing. We have eaten at their restaurant three times. Twice....fantastic. Once...a disaster because of slow service and messed up order but excellent service recovery. The first two meals were truly fantastic. Last Saturday night, we had the Canyon Cassoulet and the Potato Crusted Cod. Both were really outstanding. We also had a goat cheese salad that we will crave. Fabulous. The problem the following morning was a 30 minute wait and an order that obviously got messed up and had to be redone a couple of times. The breakfast items were OK but not the quality of the dinner menu. Beware - make sure to get a reservation for the restaurant, especially if it is a busy weekend. The restaurant fills up and the next closet place is a good 20-30 minutes away. There is a small bar area that has a decent menu where you can also get food and they would be an option if the restaurant is full. There is also a large screen TV in there. We went for the star gazing and it was really fun...not McDonald Observatory quality but awesome. The resident "astronomer" is a guy named Jim and he is nothing short of wonderful. We also listened to some live music that is available from 8-10 on Saturdays. The night we were there, it was a person named Doug. We got there late and wished we had come earlier...he was great. We bought his CD's and for the most part, loved them. Once again however, where they play the music is a little hilarious. Imagine an old hotel public/conference room with three large round tables. Very plain, basic. There were a few people dancing but the physical location the opposite of hip. This is a good place to bring children and pets. There is a nice pool, good food options for kids, a reptile show that would interest young kids, family appropriate movies, easy hiking. It is great to mix with a trip to the Vanishing Texas River Cruise. We went on this cruise from 11-1:30 and then went to the resort at 2. This was just perfect.
