Canyon Lake Gorge Tour, Texas, United States

Great Experience for all ages
Arriving at the visitor center we were greeted by John, our guide and immediately felt comfortable and welcome. We spent a few minutes at the center looking at pictures of the raging water overflowing the spillway and began to get a sense of how powerful this event was. We thoroughly enjoyed the 3 hour gorge tour and John's knowledge and passion for geology. We learned so much and highly recommend taking the guided tour so you can go down into the gorge to find and touch fossils. It also allows you to see just how much was washed away in the overflow. The gorge is a treasure, and taking the tour was time well spent.

Remarkable exploration of a devastating flood event.
2002 torrential rains in the Texas Guadalupe River watershed raised the impounded Canyon Lake to a level where it overflowed the spillway causing a massive river gorge exposing millions of years of geological history. This guided three hour tour through the gorge gives a detailed explanation of the layers of limestone and fossils exposed with the force of the floodwaters. Our group of six adults during this Covid time was completely safe. It’s a downhill walk with a bathroom break halfway. Very educational and interesting, a devastating flood event on July 4, 2002.

Fabulous tour!
This tour was absolutely fascinating! I took the afternoon tour with John as my tour guide. I was actually the only person on the tour so I got a lot of extra attention. The tour starts at the dam then walks you down across the spillway and into the gorge. It is an easy walk but might be difficult for folks with mobility issues. John was incredibly knowledgeable about the gorge and it is obvious that he loves his job. Probably the best time to go would be fall to spring because it would be really hot in the summer. This is absolutely a must see!
