Interesting way to visit another country

This was our first trip to Mexico. Boquillas is a very small isolated village, but the people were friendly and helpful. The US Border Patrol lady was very friendly and helpful. Ir was a short walk down to the river where a boat will come across to row you to the Mexican side. You can ride a burro up to the village but we chose a pickup truck. The driver was friendly and showed us the town before grabbing a bite of guac and salsa at Jose Falcon's restaurant. Views were great from the patio. Took the boat back across the Rio Grande and had no problem getting back through the Port of Entry. Of course, you do need your passport. Be sure to take cash. $5 round trip across the river and $10 a person for a truck ride to the village.

An Interesting Way in to Mexico
You park, walk down a sometimes muddy path - maybe .2 miles - to get to the river, and pay $5 round trip per person to don a lifevest and have 2 men row you across. Then, you have the option of riding a horse for $, walking the hilly/muddy path, or paying either $10 or $15 per person (I don't remember) round trip for a pickup ride in. We took a pickup and got dropped off at a Mexico Customs trailer where we went in to register and paid $3 per person for a wristband. Then, there are street vendors and a few restaurants. Kids will run up to you trying to sell things. All the people were very friendly. Our pickup waited for us until we were ready to return. You must be back at the Port of Entry on the US side by 4pm. We ferried over around 2pm (go earlier!), walked around a bit, and left the town by 3pm to make sure we made it back. It was easy to get across, but waiting to be processed back into the US took around an hour with only 10 people in front of us.

    Fascinating and completely Safe
We are an older couple in our late sixties so we weren’t sure if this adventure was for us but it was so enjoyable. The people in Boquillas del Carmen were so friendly and helpful as were the rangers on the Texas side. We only regretted that we didn’t bring more cash. Everything is cash there which we knew but we would have bought one bracelet from every beautiful child selling if we could. We took horses and they helped us up and down. Remember to take your passport to get back in to the US Raul was our guide and stayed with us the whole day, giving us lunch suggestions and chatting about the area. He spoke English well which was also helpful. We ate at Jose Falcons but we hear both places are great. It was delicious and we had a River view and breeze. Cost wise, it was $5 for the boat. Yes you can walk across but, really, this is their life and income. Take a boat unless it is really busy. You can walk to the town but again, take some transportation, if you can afford it. The horse was $15 and the donkeys were $10. Truck ride is $15 I believe. Lunch was about 10-12 dollars a piece. The other thing we were charged for was $3 each in Boquillas for the immigration fee. Most souvenirs were $5-25 dollars. If it is hot, go in the morning. It got way more crowded later in the day but overall was not that busy in the third week of April. This is a great experience and a great opportunity for everyone, including children, to see a different way of life. Highly recommend!
