St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Tennessee, United States

Step back into time
Whether you attend a service here or merely visit the historic site, St Paul's is not to be missed. The ambience and beauty of this old church, complete with the railing from the balcony where slaves were permitted to sit, allows one to step back into time and the history of the South. The stained glass windows are absolutely beautiful, and the services on Sunday are warm and welcoming. There's a modern hall behind the church for classes and social gatherings. It's located in downtown Franklin, steps from restaurants, coffee shops, and shopping. A definite must see!

Amazing Grace in a little space
As soon as I walked in, I was struck by the amazing pipe organ with horizontal trumpets. Saying to myself, I've seen those at St. John the Divine's in New York City, I was impressed to learn that St. Paul's is one of only three churches in the US to have such an organ. We were delighted with an impromptu performance by the organist who just happened to be on site during our tour. St. Paul's has a rich history and has survived insults of war (it's organ had been destroyed for firewood during the Civil War during occupation and the building has served as a hospital and as a stable). But today, it's proudly renovated and remains Tennessee's mother Episcopal church.

Beautiful Church
Poked our heads in this church while doing a Franklin-on-Foot tour. There is a lot of history in the building that hopefully your tour guide can impart on you. There are beautiful stained glass windows and a lot of them are Tiffany originals. There is also the pipes from the organ that are overhead and impressive in their size. Too bad there wasn't a service in progress so that we could have seen the church in it's full glory.
