St. John's Episcopal Church, Tennessee, United States

5.0 (15 reviews) Spent Ranking #6 in Columbia Churches & Cathedrals

"It would be worth dying if one could be buried in a spot....

so beautiful as this" was supposedly said by Patrick Cleburne two days before he was killed at the Battle of Franklin. The church reminded him of his home church in Ireland and wandering through the grounds one understands his sentiment. Built as a "plantation chapel" (c.1842) by the Polk brothers for their families and slaves this simple yet beautiful structure is well worth a visit for not only the aesthetics of the building but the limited role it played in the WBtS (many of those who died at Franklin were buried in the churchyard before being moved "home" or to more "fitting" spots.) If you can visit on one of the few Sundays it is open or arrange a tour of the interior then even better.

    Loved the church
We didn't get to go inside but with a little straining u can see it must be amazing. The church is remarkable and the graveyard is worthy of the soldiers buried there. So much history behind this old church, think I will return again and spend more time to find the officers graves. Really loved the old bishop tomb. Worth the time to explore.
