Did not know this was here

We did not know this was here, but it was a nice surprise to find this on the driving tour through the park. We did not get out to visit the Visitors Center and you could not drive to the Mounds themselves but you could walk to them. We could see 3 of the 6 mounds from our drive and they were very impressive. They are flat top ceremonial mounds much like the more famous Pinson Mounds complex and when you look at these structures, it is amazing that this much earth was moved and placed without the help of machines and were probably made using only wooden and stone tools.

Easy hike but trail is in bad shape
The interpretative exhibit at the trail head is very good and worth reading. The short hiking trail is in a state of disrepair with a couple of large trees across the trail, some bridges that need repair and some unclear trail markings. The downed trees are the biggest negative and surprsing since it appeas that they've been across the trail for quite some time. The trail itself is very easy to walk since it is mostly flat with only a few small ups and downs. Note that you can see the several of the mounds very easily without hiking if you go just past the interpretative exhibit and park in the small lot next to one of the larger mounds..

Added bonus to the military park
This attraction is within the boundary of the military park and very well preserved. There is a small center with information about the peoples who lived here long before the Civil War. The mounds themselves are a short walk or drive away from there with parking spots available. There is a set of stairs up to the top of one of the mounds with a sign about the area. It is worth taking the time to stop while touring the battlefield.
