Metal Museum, Tennessee, United States

4.5 (330 reviews) Sunday: Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #24 in Memphis Speciality Museums

Very impressive works of art in a one of a kind museum! Loved the creativity on display!

The Metal Museum in Memphis, Tennessee is the only museum of its kind in the United Sates. It is located on 3.2 acres of land directly overlooking the Mississippi River, just south of Downtown Memphis. On the grounds you will find a Sculpture Garden, a fully functioning Blacksmith Shop and Foundry, the Library which holds a Learning Space and works from the permanent collection, and the main Museum which houses rotating exhibitions. The Metal Museum is devoted exclusively to preserving, promoting, and advancing the art and craft of fine metal work. This is achieved through exhibitions, collections, studio practice, and community education and engagement. The value of the Metal Museum extends well beyond its exhibitions and facilities by recognizing and promoting the careers of living artists.

Unique experience on a picturesque campus
This museum isn’t huge, but it’s well priced, unique, interesting, and in a beautiful location. I went specifically for the African American Metal Workers exhibit, which had some great history and metalwork pieces. It was well curated and presented. The grounds on which the museum stand are beautiful! Metal sculpture garden in which to stroll, and a nice gazebo with a bench, where you can enjoy the river view and reflect on your day in Memphis. It’s almost like a campus, with older homes and large trees and beautiful gardens. I imagine the real attraction here is to watch the metal workers working in the shop, but none were out on this particular day (perhaps due to the searing temps, they work earlier in the morning or later in the evening). I would recommend this stop, if for nothing else, a respite from downtown.

    Interesting
Waiting for the nighttime Redbirds game to start, I had a whole day to kill. It was 93 degrees and too hot to do much outside on a Tuesday in July. The Civil Rights Museum was closed to tours and I had already done the Sun Records tour (interesting!). And so I found myself at the Metal Museum. It was interesting enough, well organized and worth my time and the relatively nominal entrance fee. On a nicer day i could have lingered in the shade watching the Mississippi roll by.
