Cool and refreshing

The falls are extraordinary! The water is clear and cold. The falls beautiful to stand at the bottom of or be at the top lookout. The trails were free of downed limbs but are natural so you have tree roots on them. However many places the tree roots help as a natural step or keep you from sliding. If you want to go right up to the bases of the falls where flip flops or water shoes. I took my socks and shoes off which was fine but my feet are delicate and I wished I had some to put on. My sister used a walking stick to cross the rocks with more balance. My son in his work boots had no issues crossing the rocks. There are several loops and trails with some signage and some spray paint dots on the trees. We did not get lost.

    Beautiful but dangerous in spots
The falls are beautiful and I love that it’s so shallow and crystal clear at the bottom of the falls. However, be warned that in places IMHO the trail is pretty dangerous. If you follow the trail to the left from the parking lot (shorter distance) it’s good most of the way until the end, where you encounter an extremely steep decline mostly made of slippery rocks and tree roots and no railing except for a few select spots. Pretty dangerous, I’ve seen a lot of people fall here and I’ve had several friends who straight up refused to go any further. If you choose to go the long way (choose the path that goes right if you’re coming from the parking lot), it’s a lot longer walk and you kinda feel lost. It’s mostly a lot easier of a hike that way, but there is one spot where you come up upon a gorge/ledge and it’s quite dangerous for kids in that spot, there are no railings and it’s very narrow. I wish someone would have informed me about these things before I went the first time. Especially if you have young kiddos or older family members I would seriously consider this before going. It is beautiful though!

Beautiful Waterfalls great for all ages
Be sure and hike the adjacent trails in addition to the Machine Falls Loop. They're all wonderful hikes - and the entire visit will take less than 3 hours. The only steep parts are near the falls themselves, so the rest of these trails are pleasant and easy. Enjoy the creeks, too! Parking is difficult on weekends.
