Great Place

A wonderful art museum. While not great in size it had lots of nice exhibits, including some great dioramas by by Narcissa Niblack Thorne, Chicago, IL. The gift shop had some nice pieces that were not too expensive.

    Free Dose of Culture!
A very inexpensive yet valuable way to spend your time. The city should be proud, if they aren't already, of it's presence and contribution to visitors and citizens. I was impressed with the spacious venue and talent displayed. A lovely gift shop offers souvenirs and keepsakes for patrons. Museum guides are available for questions and information. I have visited museums in many different cities. I lived in Knoxville for a long time and appreciated all it offered. My only suggestion and observation is that they may not be fully maximizing the potential talent existing presently in the city and it's surrounding area. I enjoyed viewing the elementary art showcased but wondered if there might be star high school and college level artists as well (or dare I say senior artists looking to reinvent themselves and their inspiration)? A premiere of that magnitude could do wonders for a young artist's career launch and resume. In short, I enjoyed my time but felt opportunities MIGHT be missed for improvement. But I am not on the committee which organizes that sort of thing.

A nice visit to a small museum with truly interesting varied offerings
My wife and I were in town to visit our granddaughter, a sophomore at UT, and opted to fit in a quick visit to the museum. It was quite easy to access via the Orange free trolley, a quick walk from our hotel on Gay Street, i.e. Hyatt Place. This is a small venue, but with an interesting assortment of various artworks displayed. For us, the highlight was the Thorne rooms on the first floor, fantastic dollhouse type re-creations of rooms from various eras. There were some truly interesting paintings by local artists on the third floor -- impressionist, classical, and modern. The entrance floor (second) offered some eclectic modern art pieces. The museum shop on the third floor had some nice works in glass, gift cards, calendars. The bathrooms (first floor) were immaculate. We did not see any options for dining. They do ask some very basic information upon arrival ("registration") very friendly staff. Admission is free...can't beat that price! Long story short, we were very glad we stopped by.
