K-25 History Center, Tennessee, United States

5.0 (12 reviews) Friday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent Ranking #5 in Oak Ridge History Museums

Worth the detour off of I-75

We were directed to the K-25 Center by a Park Ranger at the Children's Museum after she described the exhibits at that location as mainly stories about the people involved in the Manhattan project. We were looking for the history of the effort begun in the 1940s. The exhibits and the guide comments showed us what we were looking for. The museum is very near the actual site of the half mile long building where the uranium was enriched. We spent about an hour there but we went out of our trip plan to see the area which is loaded with this history. It was worth the detour.

A Must See if you’re a fan of the Manhattan Project. The Real Deal!
The Real Deal. This exhibit tells the story of the K25 gaseous diffusion enrichment facility. Unlike the nearby AMSE this is dedicated to the Manhattan Project, and the work done at Oak Ridge during WWII. A great experience. You start out getting a security badge and going to a ‘security briefing’. From there you begin the tour. Many artifacts from the facility, lots of technical displays with complex concepts explained in a very straight forward manner. I am an engineer and fan of most everything related to the Manhattan Project. I can say this is the best exhibit I’ve ever seen. Located immediately adjacent to the footprint of the original K25 building (the building itself was demolished and removed several years ago) it is something not to be missed. The staff is friendly, informative and go out of their way to ensure you have a great experience. A Must See!

    Definitely worth the stop
This museum tells the story of what was the largest Uranium processing facility that was part of the Manhattan Project. While the building is now gone, the museum really provided excellent exhibits explaining the Manhattan Project and the critical role played by this facility. This is a very professionally put together museum and when we were done visiting, my wife and I both remarked how much we had not known about this important wartime effort. Plan on about an hour + for fully taking in the museum. This museum is best for adults and teens.
