Read about the History before visiting

I researched online and read the history of the prison before we visited, I highly recommend doing this for a better perspective. Follow the self guided tour, but don't miss the video in the out building. There are some impressive displays of home made weapons and items confiscated from inmates. I was impressed with some of the paintings that the inmates painted on the walls of the dining hall. Finish off your tour with a visit to the Brushy Mountain Distillery for a little "End of the Line" moonshine tasting. There was a $5.00 fee to taste. If you are into the Paranormal there are a episodes of Destination Fear and Ghost Asylum done here. There are also some great YouTube videos dedicated to Brushy Mountain worth watching before going.

    Quite Fascinating
We have visited Alcatraz in California and other defunct prisons and asylums in the U.S. This was a good representation of a prison. You got to tour almost every area of the prison. There was not a tour guide when we were there, but the displays have good information about each of the areas. The museum store has lots of nice quality items for sale (reasonable price) and includes a restaurant with a prison motif. The area surrounding the prison is very pretty. There is one area that had displays of weapons, art, and other contraband (smokes, tattoo machines, etc.). It was interesting to see the artistic skills of some of the inmates. We enjoyed this self-guided tour. $16 for adults.

    Beautiful Venue
The view was worth the trip. The venue atmosphere and the weather was great for the Dwight Yoakam. A perfect summer night. We got there around 6:45-7 and missed the long (hot) line, walked right in and sat right down. Next time, we would probably sit in the grassy area (to avoid drinkers walking back & forth) and utilize the free camping. Be aware of speed traps in the area. Speed limits change from 55 to 35, then 45 in an instant (on open highway).
