Grotto Falls Trail, Tennessee, United States

4.5 (927 reviews) Spent Ranking #14 in Great Smoky Mountains National Park Hiking Trails

Short hike to a nice walk behind falls.

We did this hike to the falls with the entire family...2 grandparents, 4 adults, 1 teen and a 7 and 2.5 year old. Everyone walked on their own and made it there and back. We walked behind the falls, touched the falls, put our feet in the water and took many great shots. The 2.5 year old grandson even had us singing the Ants go Marching as we hiked the trail. GO EARLY! This is a short hike to this falls and parking can be tricky if you sleep in and then decide to go hike.

Nice to Experience a Walk Behind a Waterfall
From our parking spot it was 3.2 miles round trip. The signs say it was 1.4 to the waterfall but of course there is a short distance to get to the signpost. Our hiking app said we gained 617 feet of elevation. The nice thing about this trail is that it is uphill to the falls (but a gradual climb) then all downhill back out. It made for an easy hour and twenty-five-minute hike round trip to the car with plenty of stops for photo opps at the falls. We hiked on a cool day in September. The trail is in great condition. On our way into the trail, we observed a baby bear sleeping in a tree. He was hanging out on a limb over the Roaring Fork Motor Trail. We also walked very close to a couple of turkey. They obviously were not at all concerned by the human traffic in their vicinity. This is a busy and popular trail. We had attempted to hike it on multiple occasions in the past, but it was always closed for one reason or another. This time however it was open and we happily took a hike. This is a popular trail in the Smokey’s. It no doubt stems from its distance and the ability to get up close and personal with the falls. This is a trail we are happy we finally checked off of our to do list. Highly Recommend!
