Incredible scenery from all three balds
This is a beautiful hike located about 90 minutes from Asheville. It made for the perfect day hike while visiting Asheville. At the parking lot, there is the option to hike the trail off to the west toward Tennessee or east in North Carolina. Hike the North Carolina section to enjoy the views from three balds in quick succession. If you do not have the legs to make it to the end of the trail, the views are quite spectacular from the first bald, Round Bald. If you choose to hike the whole trail, it is five miles round trip to hike Round Bald, Jane Bald and Grassy Ridge Bald. Do not make the mistake of stopping when you arrive at Grassy Ridge Bald. Keep following the trail all the way to the end to catch huge panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. This is a busy trail with sections that require single file hiking.

Carver's Gap- Beautiful views
We wanted to hike all the way to the Bald area, but couldn't due to the fact we had hiked trails in Roan Mtn Park on Monday, and did a 17 mile bike ride on Tuesday. I was just too 'sore' to make it to the first one. We will return and try again. The views we did get before the evergreen part of the trail were beautiful and look forward to seeing more of this. At least I can say we 'hiked' the Appalachian Trail....a little.
