Impressive Chinese art collection

The Belz Museum has 5 permanent exhibit galleries: 3 Asian, 1 Judaic, and the Holocaust Memorial Gallery. Special exhibits are brought in semi-annually. The museum is unofficially called “The Jade Museum,” since one of the main materials featured is jade in sculptural form. The main Asian collection features artworks from the Qing Dynasty which ran from 1644-1911. The Judaic Gallery contains over 200 works of art created by contemporary Jewish artists working and living in Israel today. The Holocaust Memorial Gallery offers visitors an opportunity to meet survivors of the Holocaust through photographic portraits and biographical sketches. It is also a repository for items, stories and contemporary art that will honor survivors and their families and preserve their history. Admission prices: $6 adult, $5 senior, $4 student. Free under 5.

    FANTASTIC carved ivory and jades
Absolutely amazing pieces of carved ivory - from full tusks (even ancient mammoths) to small pieces. The jades too are phenomenal. I have been in museums all over the world (biut not China!) and have never seen such a large collection of beautiful work! There are a number of other excellent pieces, too. For $6, well worth it for anyone to come take a look on a rainy day, even if it's not normally your thing. The Judaica was pretty impressive, too, including a huge collection of contemorary silver and some art. Loved that they included the "Living On" exhibition - a collection of photos and stories of Holocaust survivors relevant to Memphis. An easy walk from any location downtown, it's on the trolley line. In the basement, accessible by either elevator or stairs.

Best kept secret in Memphis. Plan 2 hours, you won't be sorry!
This museum houses an incredible amount of carved jade and should be called the "Jade Museum". Affordable, only $5.00 for seniors. Also houses art by current artists from Israel and an outstanding collection of memories of Holocaust survivors living in the Memphis area.
