Backbone Rock Waterfall, Tennessee, United States

4.5 (20 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Shady Valley Waterfalls

Short hike but beautiful falls!

I have been going to Backbone Rock for years and had no idea there was even a waterfall there!! Fortunately, one of my hiking websites had a listing for it. It turns out, the waterfall is on the opposite side of the road and down the street from the main parking lot where I usually hike. There is a fence with a marker that says Backbone Falls. If you go to the end of the fence, you'll see a small cascade and steps going up. Take the steps about halfway up, and you'll see the waterfall. You can walk down to the water, but you need to watch your step since it can be very slick. I would definitely do this one again!

    Beautiful be careful on route
This is so amazing to ride through into the park through this tunnel in a huge rock once used by the railroads. The trail that goes on top and over the actual backbone rock is a steep rock staircase that has a lot of wear and erosion. It is passable, just be safe up there. The lower trail that leads to the waterfall isn't a bad trail. BUT if you need a hint, skip trail, along road is a small chain link fence leading to the exit of the waterfall trail. You will follow the fence until you see a rock staircase. Go about 30 steps and you are at the most optimal view of the waterfall. Enjoy
