Scenic spot
The first railway bridge over Vanajavesi was built in the 1870s when the railway line was extended from Hämeenlinna in the direction of Tampere. The first bridge was damaged during the Civil War in 1918. The new arch bridge made of steel was completed in the early 1920s. The railway bridge was widened with another similar arch bridge in 1960 when the second pair of tracks in the direction of Tampere was built. In 1953-1981, there was a pier for Hopealinja boats next to the bridge. Trains stopped here and you could take a scenic cruise in the direction of Tampere. When traveling by train from Helsinki to Tampere, the views are most beautiful at this point. You will see the stunning Vanajavesi Lake and the historic Aulanko Hotel. We have gone many times under this bridge while walking from the railway station to the hotel or back. It is a scenic 4-kilometer lakeside walk.
