Päijänne National Park, Tavastia Proper, Finland

4.5 (5 reviews) Spent More than 3 hours Ranking #3 in Padasjoki National Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas

Beautiful views, clear waters, sandy beaches, exciting hiking trails

Päijänne is the deepest (95 meters) and the 2nd largest (over 1,100 square meters) lake in Finland. It is 120 kilometers long. The capital of Finland (Helsinki) gets drinking water from Päijänne. Päijänne National Park consists of lake areas and many islands. Most people visit the national park by own boats. However, it is quite easy to visit Päijänne National Park without a boat, too. You can drive from Padasjoki via Kellosalmi Bridge to Virmaila. It is the largest island on Lake Päijänne. The campfire place of Höysniemi is accessible by car. Or you can drive via the road 314 (Vääksy-Sysmä) to Pulkkilanharju Ridge. There is a quite nice Pulkkilanharju Nature Trail in Asikkala (see separate reviews of that) there. M/S Elbatar has scheduled cruises from the harbor of Padasjoki to Kelvenne Island in midsummer. See separate reviews of Kelvenne trail. We visited the national park with a rowing boat, too. It is only about 1 km from Kullasniemi Holiday Villas (a rowing boat was included in the price of the villa) and less than 0.5 km from Mainiemi Caravan and Mainiemi Canoeing Center to Kalainsaari Island. There is a nice barbecue area on the southwestern part of the island. Please, notice that there are dry toilets in the national park. However, you have to have own toilet papers with you.
