Pieman River Cruise, Tasmania, Australia

4.5 (127 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Corinna Boat Tours

A special experience!

The "Arcadia II"is a beautifully maintained boat made from Huon Pine with excellent outdoor seating, necessarily well protected from the prevailing weather. The cruise comes with an excellent individual lunch pack. There is a great commentary throughout the trip; we don't wish this following comment to be seen as a criticism (but a suggestion) - there could be a few more "close up & personal" stops to further improve the unique cruising experience e.g. to view and photograph the wonderful examples of Huon Pine (near the Savage River) or the old landing. There is a demanding but rewarding hike to the beach and the Pieman River heads when you disembark (to enjoy your lunch). This cruise must not be missed.

See the Tarkine Forest from the water
Our cruise on the historic huon pine boat Arcadia II was a highlight of our experience of the Tasmanian West Coast and a great way to see the beautiful Tarkine forest. The reflections in the dark tannin-stained water were glorious. Hosts Norm and Lorraine looked after us well. Although Norms commentary was good, we found the best way to find out anything we particularly wanted to know was to travel with him in the wheelhouse. Lorraine scurried up and down the steps with our morning teas, and distributed excellent picnic lunches to have at the mouth of the river, where we had time to walk to the log-strewn beach. Warning: this walk is a bit of an obstacle course, necessitating scrambling over fallen timber and crossing creeks. Leeches were present in numbers, so use insect repellant around the top of your socks!

Best Way to See the Beauty of the Pieman River
If you're exploring the mid center to north & mid western side of Tasmania, the Pieman River Cruise is not to be missed. With all that Tas has to offer, it's hard to select the areas and adventures to see so we were happy to find Tassy travel expert, Susie, 'Tasmanian Odyssey' who created a great detailed itinerary that included a stay Corinna Wilderness Lodge and the cruise along the Pieman River which borders one side of the lodge. The lovely 1939 boat with an interesting history of hard work, has been comfortably outfitted for about 16 passengers. There's seating inside on inclement days and outside covered seating; plus access to the interior captain's bridge, and below deck to the toilet. Food and hot beverages are served by a lovely hostess throughout the excursion, and both she and the captain offer lots if interesting info about the boat, the area, the rainforest eco-culture and best of all, a 90 minute docking/stopover close to where the river meets the ocean wherein you walk through the grass, and shrub covered dunes to end up at the 'heads' where the ocean crashes along the wide beach - next stop west is South America; so it's a gob-smacking place to stand, walk, view the majesty of this part of the world. It's a gorgeous experience; and yes, it's a tough drive to get there, but spend a couple of days at the Corinna Lodge (really your only option there!), and take in the Pieman Cruise.
