Remnant of the Japanese Empire
During the Second World War, this former prestigious hotel was an officers' club for the Japanese Imperial Army. It also entertained young kamikaze pilots who had a good time before going to meet their fate. The complex is constructed in Tang Dynasty style. It is well worth a visit; the Museum is one of the best remaining examples of Japanese-era wood-built architecture. By the way, visitors can experience a tea ceremony and sample Kaiseki vegetable fare.

Remnant from a fallen empire
Taiwan was the jewel in the crown of the Japanese Empire. Some things remain, such as the building housing the Beitou Museum, which was once the residence of an upper-class Japanese family. Much of the interior remains intact, it's well worth inspecting. The period of Japanese occupation (1895-1945) is regarded as a golden age by some older Taiwanese people.

When Taiwan was part of Japan's Empire
The Beitou Museum was once the the residence of an upper-class Japanese family. As we have travelled to Japan several times, it's easy to recognise the architecture. It is still intact, including the ceremonial bathing area. Beitou was notorious throughout the Japanese Empire as a resort. Kamikaze pilots spent their last days here before plunging into Allied warships. The Japanese colonial era (1895-1945) left a profound and lasting impact on Taiwan, as this fine remnant of Japanese colonial culture shows.
