National Museum of Taiwan History, Tainan, Taiwan

4.5 (191 reviews) Monday: Spent Ranking #1 in Annan Speciality Museums

Must See

Worth the effort to visit, bus 88 from railway station takes about 45 minutes. Very good exhibits and English audio guide does a good job. No other museum in Taiwan will come close to going over the history of this island. Allow 3 hours, maybe more.

A good overview of the Chinese period and the Japanese occupation
We visited this museum on April 20. There is a bus (#18) from Tainan Station to the museum. It is a drive of about 45 minutes. When you pay the entrance fee you have the option to purchase an audio guide. The 2nd floor gives a good impression of the history of Taiwan. Especially the Chinese period and the Japanese occupation is elaborated. The exhibition has a lot of diorama's. Almost everything is explained in English on the information boards. The audio guide will give you much more information. If you want to listen everything on the audio guide, you will have at least 3 hours at the museum. There is not a restaurant at this museum.

Perfect to discover Taiwan history !
This museum is really interesting if you want to understand the history of Taiwan from the prehistoric period to the present. I haven't seen a museum of this kind elsewhere in Taiwan. Very complete. Almost all the information are translated in English. There is a lot to read, but also many life sized scene reproductions. You can visit the temporary exhibitions (when I went, one was about Taiwanese food and the other about immigration to Taiwan, but not a lot of English translation though). Besides, a big area seems to be developed for the children. You can easily spend between 3 and 4 hours in the museum if you go through everything. Entrance price : 100 NTD (50 NTD for discount fare). Audioguide are available for another 100 NTD I think, but if you don't mind reading, it might not be useful. To go : I took bus 18 (18 Ntd) from Tainan center to the museum (less than an hour). But it is not very frequent, I have waited a long time, so check the timetables before. You can also take the train to Yongkang station and then bus 20 to the museum. A very useful website (and maybe an app) gives all the information about Tainan bus timetables/itinerary but sadly I am not allowed to put a link here.
