Surprising!

The Matterhorn Museum – Zermatlantis offers insight into the development of Zermatt. It shows the triumph and tragedy surrounding the first ascent of the Matterhorn. Here one is immersed in the mountain world of past generations: One sees how the people lived in Zermatt in the 19th century and shudder at the sight of the broken rope from the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. Four of the seven climbers lost their lives at that time. And one looks in wonder at “Theo,” the 16th century mercenary who did not succeed in crossing the Theodul Pass.

Well Worth a Few Hours to Visit
Due to the weather, we were not able to take the Gornergrat Railway up to see the Matterhorn. Instead, we used our Swiss Travel Pass Flex for free admission (saved us 10 CHF per person) to the Matterhorn Museum. The museum is located under the ski village of Zermatt near St. Mauritius Church and does have limited hours (posted on the museum door). The museum traces the development of Zermatt from a tiny Alpine village to the ski resort destination it is today. We enjoyed learning about the hazards of all those who tried to scale the Matterhorn, losing their life in the deal. One of the exhibits has a piece of the snapped hemp rope from the 1865 first attempt to scale the mountain by Edward Whymper and his party. In the mountain village exhibit, there are 14 houses (church, hotel, huts, etc.) to explore. Well worth a few hours to visit.

    Highly informative museum
This is a small museum with limited hours, but provides a well-curated introduction to Zermatt’s mountaineering history and everyday living in, and the wildlife of, the Swiss Alps. The multimedia explanation of the first successful (but tragic) expedition to the summit is particularly interesting, and they have the frayed rope that led to the disaster of that day. It’s a real gem.
