Wonderful little museum!

The exhibition presents fragments of Svalbard's 400-year history and describes factors that help support life and the activities taking place here, which together reveal the close relationship between sea and land, nature and cultural history. Family friendly.

Very nice museum - easy walk from mid-town
We had 4 hours post-Quark cruise to spend in town. After shopping and eating, we walked down to the museum. It cost approximately $10 per person and was well worth the time. We completed the visit in less than one hour but 1-2 hours is sufficient. It is a great summary of what you see in the area: animals, history, etc. Displays are in multiple languages, including English.

    Great Intro. to Svalbard
Great introduction to the history, culture and nature in the area. Worth doing before that polar cruise. Attractive and spacious exhibition space. Well labeled in English and Norwegian. They also sell upmarket souvenirs such as woolen hats, scarves and ear muffs using traditional walkers’ design. Also scarves, hand knit sweaters, and designer T shirts. No café on site but the Husky Cafe (complete with retired husky dogs) is a five minute walk on the Main Street.
