Elephant Megalithe

We have visited the Elephant stone on our way from white water rafting. It was a nice place to see the megalithes. We were also amazed at the location where the site is. It is int he middle of rice fields so its green all around the place with stunning views.

    Megalithic Indonesia
We had wanted to go to the Pasemah Plateau (also known as the Besemah Plataeau) for a very long time. But this remote region, nestled between sheer mountain walls in the Bukit Barisan Range, is very off the beaten track and takes a long time to get to- even from Palembang. It is best known to the outside world for its megalithic remains, of which The Elephant Stone is the most impressive example. The elephant has been carved around the natural contours of the rock, making this an impressive piece of prehistoric art- the best we saw in our time on the plateau. Having said that, it is the natural beauty of this region which won us over. The rice fields and coffee plantations set against the background of vivid blue mountains is what remains in our memories, more than the ancient carvings.
