    Someone Please Save This Site
Bengkulu, once Bencoolen, was once part of the British Empire. This site was once a British East India Company graveyard with an impressive array of mausoleums and headstones. The city suffered horribly from malaria back in the day and British men assigned to this post had no more than a 50% chance of surviving their first year here. This makes this cemetery a very moving experience. Many of the men who died here were still in their early 1920s. Sadly, the cemetery has been plundered by locals for building materials and signs of neglect and even vandalism are evident everywhere. This unique historical site will soon be destroyed if someone does not intervene. Hopefully, some historical society or conservation group will step up and save this invaluable cultural heritage.
