Spotted Deer and a Glimpse of Colonial Grandeur
Raffles was a pretty enlightened guy for his age. A couple of hundred years ago, he took the trouble to learn Malay, wrote enthusiastically about the culture and history of the Indonesian archipelago, explored the ruins of a little-known Javanese stupa called Borobodur and made detailed records of the fabulous fauna and flora of Sumatra. His name is immortalized in Singapore's most famous historic hotel, but that is not the only trace of his time in South-East Asia. In the early nineteenth century he replaced Thomas Parr, who had been murdered in 1807, serving as the governor of the British colony of Bencoolen. This palace of his now serves as the residence of the governor of the Indonesian province of Bengkulu, so it is off limits to tourists, but you can see it well enough from the perimeter fence. The grounds are home to large flocks of spotted deer and the locals stop by and hand them food through the bars.
