Amna Suraka, Sulaymaniyah Province, Iraq

4.5 (48 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Sulaymaniyah Speciality Museums

Very Worthwhile

My wife and I toured Amma Suraka/Red Security Museum with a tour guide. The facility is much larger than I anticipated and is very worthwhile. There are several different sections including some outside exhibits. We enjoyed the museum a lot and thought it was very worthwhile. I recommend visiting with a guide as you will learn a lot more about the facility and its history.

    Great Museum
Amna Suraka is a mix of museums. It has some examples of how Saddam's secret police treated people; it commiserates the loss of life during the 1991 exodus of Kurds from the cities, and there is a tank park where you can literally climb all over them. The key exhibit is the mirror hall with a mirror for every Kurd killed by the Saddam regime in around 1988; and a light for every village destroyed. It's not a cheerful place, but it's not too depressing either. All this in a potential movie set of pockmarked buildings damaged in the various wars. One of my top spots.
