Good display of busts of local heroes
We visited the library on Prospekt Ismoili Somoni to view the busts of local heroes outside. The Library is a beige coloured building which seems modern when compared to the nearby buildings. There are three busts, which represent famous persons who lived in Khujand. The single bust to the left is of Abu Mahmood Khojandi. He was a famous astronomer and mathematician who in 994 constructed an observatory in Tehran. The mural sextant in the observatory was the largest in the world at that time. The two busts to the right include Mahasti Khujandi who was a famous dancer, singer and poet. She lived in the 10th century, and was a rarity, as female poets were not encouraged in that era. The final bust, is a rare sighting of Haji Yusuf Khojandi . He was the local version of Marco Polo, as he traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia. He was knowledgeable about Geography, Science and nature. He wrote widely on his travel experiences and made this information available to locals. All these heroes names end in Khujandi, as this means that this is their area of origin. A short walk north west of this site is the Khujand Historical Leaders monument, which has six busts of heroes. The busts of Abu Mahmood Khojandi and Mahasti Khujandi are replicated at this site. A short walk south of the Library, is the Alley of Khujand heroes, which are busts of locals who contributed to the development of the city.
