Kayrakkum Reservoir, Sughd Province, Tajikistan

4.5 (31 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Khujand Bodies of Water

Be sure to see the Tajik Sea!

OK, it's really a reservoir, but it's a nice big lake, with swimming that will help bribing down the high-90s temps you are otherwise enduring in summertime Sughd.

    Dip worthy
A man made “sea” in Khujand the reservoir, now officially designated as the Tajik Sea as of 2016. It is part of a designated wetlands or Ramsar site and it is quite large so it gives the impression of an inland sea. Lots of birds for bird-watching enthusiasts and you can swim but most of the public beaches are a bit of a mess and not cared for. Nice place to take a dip on a hot day regardless.

Worth a Visit - What Else is There?
Taking marshrutka 40 or 40A from opposite Khijand Bazaar gets you a 30 min drive to the gates of a Sanitarium on the banks of the reservoir. From there you can walk to the main beaches, with a separate swimming area. The marshrutkas will pick up from the same place that they drop off, but you may need to walk from the sanitarium to the main road to find one otherwise. It's a nice spot for lunch, or a drink and the water is very swimmable. Quite amazing when you think it's all man made. Would make a good day out of you had kids, there were waterslides and floating things for them to play on.
