Liberdade, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil

4.5 (13.0k reviews) Spent Ranking #4 in Sao Paulo Neighborhoods

My favorite neighborhood to fill my otaku soul.

It's one of my favorite neighborhoods. I'm passionate about Japanese pop culture and I find it all here. Plus the restaurants and cafes are a bonus. I also take advantage of the street fair that takes place on weekends. The place is very busy and there are places so famous that you can end up waiting for a long time in line. In that case I recommend trying to go from Monday to Friday. It's the third year in a row that I've been going and I feel like I still have a lot to discover. I already have a list of restaurants and shops to visit on my next trip! Like any place, you need to be careful and safe. Avoid walking around with your cell phone exposed for a long time, if you don't have experience, it's good to go with someone. I didn't have any negative experience there, but I always take these measures regardless of the city or neighborhood I'm in. I always take the opportunity to stop by the markets and look for new things to try.

    Best Neighborhood in SP
Liberdade is unlike anywhere else in the world. It's a must see for Sao Paulo. If you can only go to 1 place on SP, this is it. Amazing restaurants, really cool shopping. Japanese shops with all your otaku needs (anime, manga, figures etc). Chinese shops with Chinese imports and all your religious and folk iconography (Buddha statues, good luck charms, etc)

A different place to visit in Sao Paolo downtown area
For first time tourists, Liberdade can be a nice place to visit, spend a morning or an afternoon and have lunch in this small neighbourhood. You can find Chinese and Japanese restaurants and fast food places, 3 oriental medium size markets with a great variety of foods and beverages (I recommend Casa Bueno) and a couple of traditional oriental home decor and clothing stores to explore (nothing very fashion if it is what you're looking for). Liberdade is located right next to Liberdade subway station The access is very easy by bus or by cab too. Parking lot and other grocery stores are also available in the area. Also, you will find plenty of homeless people around. Sometimes during the week or weekends, you will see a small flea market right in front of the subway station exit with local Brazilian and Asian food.
