Where a mighty river is born

The São Francisco River spring is one of those attractions that probably only Brazilians can understand and value. This mighty river is the stuff stories, folklore and myths are made of, yet to see it rising from the earth, gently bubbling then beginning to run its course north is nothing short of amazing. The São Francisco is the longest all-Brazilian river (the Amazon is born in Peru), running north- northeast through five states in its 2,800 km until it ends in the Atlantic Ocean. The spring isn't too far from the most popular entrance to the Serra da Canastra National Park (dirt roads, of course) and is well sign-posted. Next to it is a statue of Saint Francis of Assisi.
