EXTREMELY INTERESTING - DO NOT MISS IT !!!
I read some of the review from previous visitors, and frankly none of them do justice to this amazing place. One said "Go when you have an extra hour and a half". Trust me, I was there for almost five hours and still feel I want to go back to see more. Yes, most videos are in Portuguese, after all this is museum of the history and culture of the part of Brazil. I don't really believe it was built for or intended for foreign visitors although they are extremely friendly and accommodating. All the brochures are available in English in each of the exhibits throughout the entire building. The restored "Mansion" was actually the Ministry of Fazenda and it's main purpose was to "Care for those who need general guidance on the services provided by the Ministry of Finance of Minas Gerais (MG-SEF). to answer questions relating to the payment of state taxes, applications and declarations to the tax authorities or forward comments and suggestions, by the taxpayer, and physical or legal entities". Quote taken from their own declaration of service. If you are interested in history, culture, agriculture, racial relations, exploration, archaeology, and any other topic related to human growth and development, this is a place for you, but take your time and see it in it's entirety. There is a "Coffee Shop" right on the first floor an many chairs and sofas distributed throughout for those who want to just take a rest every now and again. I loved it, and honestly plan to return before I leave this area. Adjacent to this building, and across the "Plaza of Liberty" there are several more museums and exhibits not to be missed, so make sure you set aside at least an entire day to really enjoy this beautiful area of the city. PS: I have no photos to share because they very politely ask you to check your packages and cameras when you first enter and register.

Wonderful place to spend a few hours!
I was pleasantly surprised with many of the exhibits. Lots of history of the state of Minas Gerais. Many self run audio visual exhibits, some children friendly areas, the free water in the reading room was a nice touch. Lovely cofee shop. I was particularly spell-bound by the Sebastiao Salgado exhibit --- spent over an hour in that one room
