Sugar and . . . Not Everything Nice

Estate Whim has long been known for its colonial-era Great House, slave quarters, and mill factory complex; but much more can be found on the museum’s twelve acres. Various museum exhibits include My Granny House, the Living Museum, and rotating exhibits in the North and South Exhibit Halls. Also located on the museum’s grounds is the Research Library & Archives, where visitors can conduct genealogical and historical research and purchase photographs from our unique photograph collection.

    Nice place
The museum is situated about two miles east of Frederiksted. It is a three-room historically restored plantation house that dates to the era of the Danes. In the early 18th century, Estate Whim was part of the trade triangle: sugar, rum, and slavery.

    Still recovering from Hurricane Maria
Although we visited for less than an hour, we felt fortunate to find Estate Whim open. We had read on their website they were open Wednesday-Saturday, but found them closed on a Friday. We just happened to be driving by on Saturday and saw a couple of cars in the parking lot, so stopped. I would call ahead to see if they are open at this point. The great house is closed after major roof damage in the hurricane, but the kitchen, museum, and out buildings are open, and there is plenty to read about the estate and sugar production. The docent told us they need money for restoration, although a few more signs on the property, and an update to their website would be helpful.
