Surprise inside tour.
Painstakingly rebuilt after being disassembled in the 1960s, this Greek Revival masterpiece saw Lincoln serve as a lawyer and legislator. In 1858, Lincoln delivered his landmark "House Divided" speech in the Capitol's Representatives Hall.

Closed due a preservation project
As of June 10, 2021, "The Old State Capitol will be closed due a preservation project until further notice." You can still walk around the block on the outside of the gates and see the statues of the Lincoln family and visit the Visitor's Center. When I walked by, there were construction crews actively working on the dome and later, there was a musician giving a small concert.

I visited here several years ago and returned with my wife. While we did not get to go inside the historic markers around the grounds are worth the walk. To visit inside and see it much the same as when Lincoln walked the halls was memorable. Pot bellied stoves to heat the cold legislative halls is remarkable.
