Bistrita Monastery ,an old spiritual place for Romanians
I recently visited this old monastery ,located near Costesti village .It was built around 1490 by a rich family of noblemen ,Craiovesti. It is a famous place for pilgrims ,attracted by the relics of Saint Gregory Decapolite ,brought here in 1497 from Constantinople .The complex inhabited today by nuns has a nice courtyard ,it was rebuilt many times during its long history and the painting inside was realized by a great Romanian painter ,Gheorghe Tattarascu. In this monastery was printed the first book in the country ,called Liturghierul .Near the monastery we can also visit ,if we follow a narrow path of Bistrita river ,the cave of Saint Grigorie Decapolitul.

Very nice 19th century style monastery
It is a beautiful monastery in the middle of the mountains, in a garden full of flowers. There is a very interesting cave you can climb up to right from the monastery's yard. Be sure to ask the nuns for the key if you decide to climb there- it was locked when we got up. Since you got there, do visit Cheile Bistritei (the river boards) right next to the monastery.
