Authentic
Over 3 centuries of history and the graveyard of Matei Basarab are exceeded by the sheer authenticity of this place. I liked this smaller monastery more than Bistrita, it’s more authentic. It’s not far away from Bistrita Monastery located in the valley, but the uphill road crosses a limestone pit and there it’s not 100% clear which way to turn; the last part of the road is covered with tarmac, part of a project funded with EU money for this place. There is a small souvenir shop, cash only. Most items are in Romanian language. The parking is available for at least 10-15 cars. The view from the top of the nearby hill is gorgeous, to Horezu and beyond. There is also a panel with the history of the anti-communist fighters from this area in the late 1940s, and with the other attractions from nearby.

Wonderful!
We visited a lot of monasteries around the country, but from this area I think this one was the best! Large yard around the church, very well maintained with flowers and vegetable gardens. Old buildings beautifully restored with carved wooden doors and a nice store with local products made by nuns.
