Impressive 17th century church with a striking interior

A must visit for anyone in Uusikaupunki: these kinds of churhes are few in Finland. Within the church one can examine the ceiling built in the shape of an upside down hull of a boat, floor full of old tombstones marked with skulls and hour glasses, various paintings, and votive ships. Note also the memorial for the fallen in the second world war outside the church. There's a Charon figured statue attending to the graves by Finnish sculptor Aimo Tukiainen.

Inside the Old Church is a sky with over 4500 stars
This valuable old church from 1629 is the oldest building in Uusikaupunki. After the great fire a new large church was built in the hart of the town in 1855 and the old church was gradually left to neglection. It was used as a store room and it was very near to demolishion. Nowadays it's been beautifully renowated. The speciality of it is the wooden blue ceiling with over 4500 stars in the shape of a hull. Uusikaupunki has always been a remarcable sailing town. The church serves nowadays as concert hall with an excellent acoustics for chamber music. The renown 36th Crusell Music Festival takes place 22.-29.7.2017. Uusikaupunki celebrates the 400th Anniverasry this year. It was founded by the King Gustav Adolf II of Sweden the 19th of April 1617.

Old church in new city
Uusikaupunki=Nystad ( new city in swedish). Echivalent also in finnish language. Althrough old, everything is corky and carefully taken care, and is been quite representative atraction for the small city of Uusikaupunki ( abt 15000 inhabitants by 2010). Pictures attached speak for themselfs.
