The Archipelago Trail, Southwest Finland, Finland

4.5 (43 reviews) Spent Ranking #13 in Turku Hiking Trails

Love cycling? Ride this.

If you love travelling with bike, if you love nature, sea and seeing new places this is the thing you should do. Take your time to plan the trip carefully and check the schedules of the ferries in advance. You can go short trip for about 120 km or long trip of about 200 km or some variation of these. We have done long and short with our full suspension mtb’s and it has been a lot of fun. Book a airbnb on the way and spend some nice time in for example in island Nagu and all it’s restaurants.

    Small Archipelago Tour
Cycled with my friend the Small Archipelago Tour (110km) on two days. We started from Turku via Parainen to Nauvo. Cycling roads were good in mainland, and even when you drove next to the road. It wasn't crumbled on the side like old roads are. Drivers were clearly used to cyclist as they slowed down and made careful by-passes. We stayed the night in Nauvo and the next Day took the ferry to Rymättylä. Rymättylä was the hardest part of the route. Hills after hills, Road was old and majority of the time you drive on crumbled side of the drive way. Plus side was that hill up means hill down so we got some really good speed. Naantali was beautiful and road from Naantali to Turku was build for cycling. We took it more as an exercise and as first timers didn't want to get off the path for 5kms or 10kms to recommended sightseeing places. Just enjoyed the pace of cycling.

    Stunning Coastal Scenery
We wanted to drive around the archipelago shortcut trail in one day and the tourist information board in Turku were very helpful providing maps and advice. Information packs are also in many of the shops and supermarkets and are free of charge. We were really unsure how to go about this so I have written a detailed plan of how to do this in a day. Most of the ferries were free, roll on, roll off and we didn't book in advance although we went in the middle of July. You can of course take a few days to do this and some people were cycling the route. Arrived ferry Parainen/Pargas Ferry to Nauvo 8.30am (10 mins) Drove across Nauvo Island (30 mins) Ferry Nauvo to Korpoo 9.08 (5 Mins) Drove across Korpoo Island (10 mins) Coffee stop at Korpoo harbour Ferry Korpoo to Houtskari 10.10am (30 mins) 10.40 arrive Houtskari. Head for Mossala Drive 20 mins and take short ferry at Kivimo (5 mins) Take another short ferry Mossala (5 mins) Arrive Mossala harbour 11.30. Excellent restaurant, cottages, camping etc Depart Mossala 12.15, one hour crossing on MS Antonio, 35 euros for car including passengers, pay on boat. Smallish boat, no restaurant or toilets Arrive12.10 in Dalen on Iniö island Drive 10 mins and drive onto short ferry at Skagen Drive to Kannvik Ferry to Heponema 14.45 arrived 15.15. Drove throughTaivasallo on route 192, then route 1930 to Merimasku, then Rymättylla on route 189 Arrived at Hanka (archipelago shortcut) at 16.45, after short 2 min ferry crossing Ferry departed 17.20 (cost for this ferry) and arrived Nauvo 18.20. This was the last ferry of the day. Beautiful ferry journey. Very nice area where ferry lands in Nauvo: marina, bars, restaurant and Strandbo hotel. Drove for 15 minutes to other Nauvo ferry port for ferry to Parainen. Back to Parainen at 19.15.
