A monument to civic mobilization
We are told it's the "largest wooden church in the world." Well, that's what they told us about St. George's Cathedral in Guyana as well. So which is it? As far as I can tell, the latter is the highest, but the one in Kerimäki is larger, i.e. it holds more people because of its enormous width and length. The Guinness World Records website confirms this. In any case, these are both very impressive constructions. It took an enormous amount of mostly locally mobilized labor to construct this one. The Kerimäki Church is beautifully located and the building is kept in great shape. The inside is plain as you would expect in a Lutheran church, but it is very stylish. It's in town, and you can park at a nearby café that serves good sandwiches and coffee. From there it's an easy walk up the hill. As we entered the anteroom of the church there was a sign saying "Silence please." But as we entered the main hall, a Finnish guide stood in the middle and blasted out his wealth of information (we guess) to whomever wanted to hear. There was no group around him, but he continued for some ten minutes without interruption. Some people take their task a little too seriously I guess.
