Memorial of WW2 and communication

The communication centre of the Finnish army's headquarters, which was located in Mikkeli, was known by the code name, Lokki, which means "seagull" in Finnish. During the Continuation War of 1941-1944, the Lokki Communication Centre was based in a cave blasted into the side of Naisvuori hill. It handled the headquarters' telephone and telex traffic. The adjacent cave housed the regional air surveillance centre, the signalling station for the German link-up garrison and the sleeping quarters for the communication centre's staff. In addition, the cave contained working premises for Commander-in-Chief Mannerheim and his immediate subordinates. In the early 1990s, the Lokki Communication Centre's premises were skillfully restored to their appearance during the Continuation War.

    History restored underground
For a long time after the end (1945)of the war called here 'the continuation war' this vital communications site was left neglected and fell into decay. More recently it has been restored and is available for visits in the summer months. It shows how Finland mangled to keep all its military units in touch and what can be done when 'sisu' (whatever it takes) is put into action. An amazing walk back in time wiht excellent restoration work giving a real sense of the working conditions and importance of this small site for the present healthy state of Finnish economy and world status.

    Authentic wartime communications centre
The Viestikeskus Lokki is carved inside a rock. The museum displays the daily activities of the wartime communications centre that served the military headquarters. A small but an interesting specialty museum. A nice addition to visiting the Headquarters museum accross the street.
