Stancile Franz Joseph, Southern Romania, Romania

5.0 (8 reviews) Spent Ranking #9 in Prahova County Geologic Formations

Amazing view

Not the castles, but the hike ending with this view is the highlight of Sinaia. The walk up there (1-1,5 hours in snow when nature starts with the blue line) is very beautiful with great nature. The view point itself is very stunning. The view is amazing seeing the higher Bucegi mountains and Sinaia town. I was there all by myself and on the walk I saw 3 people so it is very private and remote. It is a must-do in Sinaia.

    View over Prahova valley
You can get there with car, but it's more relaxing to get there on foot. From Sinaia there is a paved alley, named "the queen's path" or "the royal path" which was used by the royalty to get to the belvedere point (about 1 hour). You can also get there from Poiana Tapului, on a wild forest trail marked with yellow dot (about 1.5 hours). Nicest is in autumn. The "Stancile Franz Joseph" are rock formations where belvedere points have been arranged in 1896 (other sources claim 1897) on the occasion of the visit of Emperor Franz Joseph. At that time relations were friendly between Austria-Hungary and Romania, and the emperor was the guest of the Romanian King Carol for a couple of days. In total there are 3 belvedere rocks. One is the actual Franz Joseph rock, with the belvedere point, where you can get a nice view over the Prahova valley (note: on the vertical side there is a bronze plaque depicting the emperor, the king, and the queen, but difficult to notice because of the vegetation). A short distance from it there is another rock top, where the emperor and the king had lunch. A third belvedere is the Bellflower Rock, about 15 minutes down the trail, to the south (refer to openstreetmap). Close to the Franz Joseph rock there is a clearing (Stâna Regala) with a nice view over the Bucegi mountains, and a barbecue restaurant.

    Fantastic panorama of the valley
A forest road takes you to a remote restaurant in the woods. The view is amazing all around. Behind the restaurant there are some rocks from (Franz Joseph's Rocks) from where you have a bird's eye view over all the Prahova Valley.
