Neagra Bison Reservation, Southern Romania, Romania

Our first encounter with a Bison

It was the first time for me and my daughter to see such beautiful animal, the Bison. The reservation is very closed to our hometown, Ploiesti and closed to Bucharest, the capital of Romania. Strengths: One in a lifetime opportunity to sit closed to such a rare animal. Weakness: You can't access the reservation without a vehicle and the staff is not properly trained to do the tour. We were lucky to find around 30 bisons in closed proximity.

For those who enjoy beautiful forests and rare beautiful animals
Zimbraria Neagra from Bucsani village is the closest such reservation to Bucharest. The European bisons are nearly extinct animals, thus such reservations are more and more rare. There are about 70 km from Bucharest to Bucsani. Then the beautiful forest follows and then the European bisons' reservation. It's not like the zoo. Fortunately, they are not in cages, they have a large perimeter of land to live on, surrounded by a wood fence. Although they are big creatures ( the largest living mammals in Europe), they seem gentle and somewhat friendly with humans. Still, don't try to do anything unexpected like overwhelming them with petting, they might not react well. Tested! Best time to go there is in spring, like we did. Good weather, not very hot, good relaxing time after a bike-ride in the forest. There's a small lanai where you can eat your sandwich sitting and watching the bisons. If you envisage you will be hungry on the way, don't be so sure you'll find a restaurant in the area, cause there are none. So, do bring food from home.

    Once in a lifetime
Enjoyable trip to meet & greet the bisons grazing around. Access road though the forest and 5 km from the nearby village, quite muddy since it had rained, but still acceptable. Once we arrived, we paid the tickets (quite cheap, say 1 EUR per person) and then entered the yard, with an observation tower in the end (two floors up). I understood the best timing is around 10:30 AM, when the bisons are coming ”for a snack”. We counted more than 20 bisons. There is also a small museum (3 rooms, only in Romanian language) near the entrance, with bisons and not only (also other species living in the forests). Overall nice experience, not sure if to be repeated. Don’t expect anything fancy or sophisticated.
