Recent History

As traveler you are interested of many things. Recent Europe's history started to be intriguing for many of us. So, early in the morning I left Bucharest for Targoviste and I found pretty easy this place. Do not expect to find signs to lead you towards it. Shortly after you pass Targoviste sign, continue ahead until you'll find a roundabout (left hand is Rompetrol gas station) - turn left and continue till you'll find a new roundabout and turn right (you have passed over a bridge) and ahead until you are again in a roundabout (this time you've passed the bridge over railroads) turn right and that's "B-dul Carol I" where you'll find (next to Targoviste Train Station and opposing a high school) the former school of cavalry founded in 1907, by the major Dragotescu. It's slogan "The cavalry officer has to be horse rider and cavalier". How noble The late clouds of the Communism in Romania made possible that the last Dictator from the former communism block to end his life in this former military facility. You'll pass near Dan II Basarab (a ruler of Wallachia) and you are invited inside for the visit. In a good shape preserved the walls remind us about the former military school being invited to see old pictures of this building. To the right is the office of the commander of the former military school - the room where the couple Ceausescu had received medical assistance, in front as you get in in the room where the trial was kept and finally to the right along the hallway the third room where the couple slept last days of their lives. Getting outside you reach to the point where the communist president together with his wife were executed.. The place is ... Well, I let you dear traveler to find out other details of this place and maybe you'll understand a piece of our Recent History. Admission fee - 7 lei/pers, Photo fee - 15 lei/camera

The end of the line for an evil couple
Located in Targoviste City, around 80 km from the capital is an old Military Barracks where the former Romanian leader and his wife were taken, tried and executed on Christmas day in 1989. Four days earlier he had attempted to speak from the Parliament buildings in Bucharest and inform the people he had persecuted for so long that things would improve in January. He was not believed and as matters went out of his control down blow in the square, Ceausescu and his wife escaped in a military helicopter. During the flight the pilot was informed the military had joined the revolutionaries, he then landed at the barracks in Targovista handing over his charges to the army. Their life of sheer luxury moved to a small drab room where they were imprisoned until their show trial on Christmas morning. It lasted less than an hour and led to their execution by firing squad. The barracks in question, well at least the four or so rooms and the execution site are now a museum staffed by English speaking volunteers. Maybe for some it will prove gruesome but in reality it provides both the Romanians and the foreign visitor to more understand the historic events at the end of the 1980's that was to effect such a major change in this beautiful and fascinating country.
